Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems
Clean agent suppression systems are the industry standard for protecting data centers and server rooms. These systems discharge a gaseous agent that suppresses fire by chemically interrupting the combustion process or by reducing oxygen concentration—without leaving any residue that would damage equipment or require cleanup after discharge.
American Fire Systems designs and installs clean agent systems using industry-leading agents including:
HFC-227ea — A widely used, fast-acting clean agent approved under NFPA 2001. FM-200 suppresses fires within 10 seconds of discharge, making it one of the most effective options for protecting sensitive electronic environments. It leaves no residue and is safe for occupied spaces at design concentrations.
FK-5-1-12 — A fluoroketone clean agent with an extremely low global warming potential (GWP of 1) compared to other halocarbon agents. Novec 1230 discharges as a liquid that rapidly vaporizes to suppress fire without harming equipment or personnel. It meets NFPA 2001 requirements and is recognized as an environmentally responsible option.
IG-541 / Inergen & IG-55 / Argonite — These systems use a blend of naturally occurring gases to reduce the oxygen level within a protected space below the point at which combustion can be sustained, while remaining at a concentration safe for human occupancy during egress. Inert gas systems carry zero ozone depletion potential and zero global warming potential.
NFPA 2001 Compliance & Engineering
